Pianoz.com was delighted to be selected to provide an upright piano for one of the most talked-about contemporary art installations in recent years: Yayoi Kusama’s The Obliteration Room at Tate Modern. Installed within the iconic Turbine Hall, the exhibition invited visitors to become part of the artwork itself. What began as a completely white domestic environment gradually transformed into a vibrant explosion of colour as hundreds of thousands of visitors covered every available surface with Kusama’s signature polka-dot stickers. Our upright piano formed part of this immersive environment, evolving from a pristine white instrument into a unique collaborative artwork created by the public over the course of the exhibition.
Originally conceived by internationally renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, The Obliteration Room is one of her most ambitious interactive works. The installation starts as an entirely white furnished apartment, with visitors encouraged to apply coloured stickers wherever they choose. Over time, the stark monochrome interior is “obliterated” beneath layers of dots, reflecting Kusama’s lifelong fascination with infinity, repetition and the dissolution of boundaries between people and their surroundings. The Tate Modern presentation was particularly significant, featuring the largest version of the installation ever created.
